Lyme was first mentioned in 774 as part of the manor of Sherborne Abbey. It appears in the Doomesday Book and in 1284 a Royal Charter granted by King Edward I added ‘Regis’ to the name.
An important artificial harbour formed by The Cobb, in 1780 Lyme Regis was an important port and ship building centre.
Beseiged by Royalist forces in 1644 during the civil war the Duke of Monmouth landed here in 1685. The Monmouth Rebellion failed and 23 rebels were hung and quartered on the beach.
Today Lyme Regis is a quiet and pretty town famed for its fossils easily found on the beach. It is here that Mary Anning was born in 1799. Well known for her finds which included an Ichthyosaur and Plesiosaur in the nearby cliffs.
With lots of shops and places to eat, museums, boat trips and of course fossil hunting there is plenty to keep the family busy.
